Will ELISpot be key to the development of vaccines against SARS-CoV-2?

Published: May 20, 2020

Updated: October 13, 2023

ELISpot and FluoroSpot have previously been shown to be central tools in vaccine development. Successful vaccines should elicit protective immune responses. Therefore, it is recommended to not only scrutinize the induction of protective antibodies but also cellular immunity. Human IFN-γ ELISpot is widely used to investigate specific T cell responses after vaccination as well as for epitope mapping.

In the recent context of a worldwide effort to develop a vaccine candidate against SARS-CoV-2 this publication by Smith et al. (Nat Commun, 2020) represents an example of our mouse IFN-γ ELISpot being employed during preclinical vaccine research.
