Sustainability

At Mabtech, sustainability is not a side project, it’s becoming second nature.

In 2024, we took meaningful steps forward across our operations, guided by the belief that better science and a better world should go hand in hand.

Our approach

The world continues to face a wide range of health challenges, from emerging infectious diseases to complex chronic conditions. At Mabtech, we remain convinced that immunology holds a key to addressing many of these challenges, not only through vaccines and therapeutics, but also through new ways of understanding and strengthening human health. Our tools and technologies are designed to support the researchers working at the forefront of this important mission.

In 2023, we carried out a materiality analysis to better understand which areas of sustainability are most relevant and impactful for our business. This work formed the basis for our sustainability plan, which remained our compass in 2024. While progress has been gradual, the process has helped us sharpen our focus and begin laying the groundwork for more structured action in the years ahead.

Our material priorities remain clear:

  • Promoting health and well-being through our products
  • Acting with integrity and transparency in our business practices
  • Supporting an inclusive, safe, and engaging workplace
  • Reducing our environmental and climate impact, step by step
  • Encouraging responsible sourcing and collaboration across our supply chain

By continuing to listen, reflect, and build on what we’ve started, we believe we can make sustainability a natural part of how Mabtech operates – every day, and in every department.

Sustainability report 2024
Phill on the run

Welcome, Phill

In early 2025, Phill Kefee joined Mabtech as the new CEO, bringing with him a strong commitment to both scientific innovation and sustainability. His leadership marks an exciting chapter for the company, with a clear focus on aligning growth with responsible practices and long-term impact.

"Sustainability at Mabtech is not a separate initiative; it’s becoming a natural part of how we work and think."

Phill Keefe, CEO

Our impact starts in the lab

Our tools empower researchers tackling everything from cancer and HIV to emerging zoonotic viruses. In 2024:

  • 5972 publications featured Mabtech products – a 12% increase from 2023.
  • 26% of those were in top-quartile journals (impact factor >6).
  • Usage in public health research grew, with more orders from national institutes and policy-shaping labs.

We’re proud that our FluoroSpot assay plays a role in next-gen vaccine research. At The Pirbright Institute, Dr. Chidiebere Ubachukwu uses it to measure T cell responses in a novel PRRSV vaccine platform, bringing us one step closer to safer and more effective vaccines in animal and human health.

"Using the FluoroSpot assay to detect key cytokines at the single-cell level, we gain valuable insights into the immune response, helping us optimize our vaccine design for improved protection and safety."

Climate & nature: Reducing our footprint

We’ve kept our environmental footprint low, and we’re working to shrink it even further:

  • 100% renewable electricity used at our Stockholm HQ for the third year running.
  • 18% reduction in water use, despite growing operations.
  • 240.1 tons CO₂e of Scope 3 emissions reported, now tracked quarterly for greater accountability.
  • Scope 1 and 2 emissions remain close to zero.

We also continued redesigning instruments and packaging with sustainability in mind: longer-lasting materials, safer chemicals, and less plastic.

Ethical business: Built on integrity

In 2024, we had:

  • 0 reports of corruption or ethics violations
  • 100% staff completion of anti-corruption training
  • Strengthened due diligence on high-risk regions and suppliers

Ethics isn’t just policy, it’s practice. Every new customer signs a clear compliance agreement, and our sales teams are trained to uphold high standards everywhere we operate.

Supply chain: Shifting toward responsibility

Sourcing and logistics matter. This year we:

  • Began integrating environmental and social criteria into how we evaluate and select suppliers.
  • Continued using recyclable, foldable cardboard packaging to reduce shipping volume.
  • Supported circularity by recycling hundreds of kilos of aluminum from used equipment.

We also reviewed logistics partners, prioritizing those investing in emissions reporting.

"Today, we make sure our instruments are built to last, easy to maintain, and included in a recycling service at end-of-life. We’ve made sustainability a natural part of our processes."

- Oscar Bermbeck, Production Engineer

Our people: Culture that cares

We believe sustainability starts with how we treat each other:

  • 51% women in our workforce, 44% in top management
  • 22 languages spoken at our Stockholm office
  • 77% of employees at HQ used their wellness benefit
  • Turnover remained manageable at 16%, as we continued investing in engagement and growth

We promote openness, diversity, and professional development through structured feedback, inclusion-focused onboarding, and meaningful internal dialogue.

"Building an organization where people thrive contributes to advancing research. With nearly 50% women in leadership and a culture of openness, integrity, and trust, we’re creating the conditions for meaningful work – and better tools for the scientists who rely on us. It’s a culture that genuinely cares, and I’m proud to be part of it."

Governance: Sustainability is everyone’s job

Led by our Chief Quality Officer and a cross-functional team, we embedded sustainability into our ISO-certified quality system. In 2024, we:

  • Decided on a governance handover to our CFO for even stronger alignment with business strategy
  • Appointed a sustainability lead
  • Encouraged employees to shape future priorities

"What makes my role especially rewarding is the genuine engagement from colleagues across the company, whose enthusiasm and collaboration have made our progress both meaningful and inspiring."

- Julia Salazar Gustavsson, Sustainability Project Lead

Looking ahead

This year showed us what’s possible when curiosity, collaboration, and purpose come together. We’re proud of the progress, but we know there’s more to do.

Whether it’s extending product life, lowering emissions, or promoting health through science, our journey continues with humility and resolve.

We’d love to hear from you, whether you’re a researcher, partner, or curious reader. Your insights help guide our next steps.
